Cat owners are desperate for a comprehensive and correct book on cat behavior. Much cat behavior advice — especially on the Internet — is poor and even harmful. Our own clients are proof; they have been crying out for years that there is “nothing out there” for cat owners. They have even admitted to having tried Cesar Millan’s obedience techniques on their cats! Cat owners in America are desperate!

“To understand cats you must understand the difference between our feline friends and ourselves. Mieshelle’s insight into the sociobiology and the behavior of our wildest companion animal in comparison to ourselves sets the framework for an intriquing book about a companion animal that lives in our homes and yet retains the wild instinct of the large felids that so fascinate us.” Jordan Carlton Schaul, PhD — Contributing Editor, National Geographic Society and Curator, Orange County Zoo
In Mieshelle’s book she will reveal for the first time to the general public the scientifically-validated Cat Whisperer behavior modification techniques she has used to cure unwanted cat behaviors all over the world.
Author Mieshelle Nagelschneider (with co-writer Cameron Powell)
Greater Seriousness of Behavior Problems. On average, cat behavior issues – spraying, inappropriate urination and defecation, destruction of property, yowling, aggression – are more pernicious and destructive than the behavior problems of their canine counterparts. These behavior issues are the number-one reasons millions of cats are surrendered to cat shelters each year and even euthanized.
Sadder Consequences of Low Awareness. The sheer number of cats in the English-speaking world, combined with the average owner’s low level of awareness of cat behavior and frustration with the destructiveness of cat behavior problems, makes it no surprise that cats are sent to shelters or even thrown out of homes at a far higher rate than are dogs – and far more often for behavioral problems than are dogs.
From Mieshelle’s Introduction: So why this book; why now? Quite simply, I have not been able to find a book on cat behavior that I found satisfying and comforting – one packed with information that’s complete, accurate, and up-to-date – and not accidentally designed to cause more problems than it solves. The book you are holding is the one I always wanted to read.
I wrote this book because I saw that cat owners were hungrier and more numerous than dog owners. The sheer number of cats and humans’ lack of awareness about how they behave mean that cats are sent to shelters, thrown out of homes, or destroyed at a far higher rate than are dogs – and far more often for behavioral problems than are dogs. In the U.S, there are 88 million owned cats (about 35 million in France, Germany, Italy, and the UK), and there are another 40 to 70 million homeless or feral cats. By contrast, there are 75 million dogs in U.S. households, and relatively few homeless or stray dogs. Sadly, cat behavior advice is often poor and even harmful. My own clients have been crying out for years that there is “nothing out there” for cat owners. They have even admitted to having tried dog obedience techniques on their cats! (I debunk the usefulness of an alpha model for cats in Chapter 2).
That’s why I have written what I intend to be your cat behavior bible – the one reference book you will read and re-read, dog-ear, give to your friends, and keep through all the cats you own. In this book, I’ll combine my own experience with the latest in the scholarly literature. . . . Where I disagree with certain experts or wives’ tales, I’ll point it out in a Conventional Advice Alert. In the following chapters, I’ll tell you what you won’t hear in most of the advice available today. You can then fall in love with even the “problem cats” all over again.

“Nagelschneider is a wizard at demystifying cat behavior and providing easy-to-follow steps for solving vexing problems. I dog-eared (or should I say cat-eared) so many pages for later reference that my book doesn’t want to close. Living with six demanding cats in a small house, I wish I’d had this excellent guide years ago.” Bob Tarte, Author of Kitty Cornered, Enslaved by Ducks, & Fowl Weather Sacramento Bee. “I wish I read The Cat Whisperer book before I started filming Must Love Cats. The cats would have liked me a lot more.” From John Fulton – Animal Planet’s Must Love Cats

You have the African wildcat, your domestic cat’s ancestor, to thank for many of your cat’s “unwanted” cat behaviors. Learn more about this during your consultation to better understand and help your cat and solve its behavior issues. We often misunderstand cat behaviors. Once cat owners understand their cat instincts and biology, they can better understand why the behavior strategies work so well and can better apply them.

Feline behavior therapy is very different from canine behavior therapy and the approach to changing a cat’s behavior is even more unique. Cats do not display obedience problems like dogs. The help you need is not focused on physical or verbal behavior modification strategies, like dog training with a dog trainer present. All cat behaviorists conduct consultations by phone or video via Skype. Our behavior plans are specific to cats and still allow for the natural feline instincts, but when and where you want them displayed. We will cover the behavior plan during the phone or video consultation and offer follow-up over the course of several weeks for all of our consultation programs.
